Does Carraragarmungee Primary School teach Auslan?
Yes. Carraragarmungee Primary School teaches Auslan (Australian Sign Language) to every student as part of the curriculum. Both classrooms learn Auslan through games, songs and everyday conversation, and a qualified Deaf tutor visits the school fortnightly to guide the program.
Learning from a Deaf tutor means students learn Auslan the way it is genuinely used, and gain a real understanding of Deaf culture and communication.
What do students learn in Auslan lessons?
Students learn greetings, introductions, colours, the fingerspelling alphabet, emotions and everyday conversation skills. They practise fingerspelling, asking and answering simple questions, and communicating through signs, facial expressions and body language.
Lessons use the Auslan Online platform alongside face-to-face tutoring, with colourful video lessons students can rewatch to revise the signs they have learned.
Why does Carra teach Auslan?
Carra teaches Auslan to build an inclusive school where every child feels valued and able to communicate. Learning a second language supports memory, concentration, problem-solving and flexible thinking, and it helps children develop empathy and respect for the Deaf community.
It fits our belief that a small school can offer a rich, thoughtful education. You can read more about our approach on our curriculum page.
Can the whole school sign together?
Yes. Our whole school, including staff, can sign the Acknowledgement of Country song in Auslan. Signing it together brings our community closer and reflects our values of respect, inclusion and connection.
Our students also performed an Auslan song at the Eldorado ANZAC Day Dawn Service, sharing what they have learned with the wider community.
