Child Safety

At Carraragarmungee Primary School, the safety and wellbeing of every child is our highest priority. We are committed to providing a safe, supportive and inclusive environment where all children and young people are respected, valued and protected from harm. "The Child at the Centre" is not a tagline to us. It is how we work every day.

Our commitment to child safety

Carraragarmungee Primary School is committed to providing a safe, supportive and inclusive environment where all children and young people are respected, valued and protected from harm. We have zero tolerance for child abuse and are committed to promoting child safety, responding to concerns, and acting in the best interests of all students.

We recognise that every child has the right to feel safe and be safe. We actively work to create a culture where children are empowered to participate, express their views and raise concerns. We listen to and value the voices of children and young people in decisions that affect them.

Carraragarmungee Primary School is committed to:

  • Implementing and embedding the Victorian Child Safe Standards.
  • Creating culturally safe environments for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people.
  • Providing safe and inclusive environments for children from diverse cultural, linguistic and religious backgrounds.
  • Promoting the safety, participation and empowerment of children with disability.
  • Respecting and supporting children and young people of all genders, sexualities and identities.
  • Ensuring all staff, volunteers and visitors understand their responsibilities to keep children safe.
  • Responding promptly and appropriately to concerns about child safety and wellbeing.
  • Maintaining robust recruitment, screening, training and supervision practices.

Responding and reporting

Carraragarmungee Primary School has zero tolerance for child abuse. All staff, volunteers, contractors and visitors share responsibility for responding to concerns.

All school staff must take reasonable steps to protect children from abuse and respond promptly to any concern about a child's safety, welfare or wellbeing. Any suspicion, disclosure, allegation or incident of child abuse is treated seriously and acted upon immediately, in accordance with Victorian legislation, the Child Safe Standards, Department of Education policies and the PROTECT Child Safety Framework.

Mandatory reporting

Teachers, principals and other mandated professionals are legally required to report to Child Protection when they form a reasonable belief that a child is in need of protection. A report is made as soon as practicable.

Staff do not need proof that abuse has occurred. Concerns are reported when reasonable grounds exist.

Department of Education

Four Critical Actions

When a child safety concern is identified, staff follow the Department of Education's Four Critical Actions:

1

Respond to an emergency

If a child is at immediate risk, contact emergency services on 000 and ensure the child's immediate safety.

2

Report the concern

Report immediately to the Principal, who is the school's Child Safety Officer, and to Victoria Police, Child Protection or the Orange Door where required.

3

Contact parents and carers

Contact parents or carers unless doing so would place the child at greater risk, or Police or Child Protection advise otherwise.

4

Provide ongoing support

Put support plans in place, monitor the child's wellbeing and liaise with relevant services as needed.
